Al Raha Camp / Wahiba Sands
Location:
Ash-Sharqiyah Sands (also known as
Wahiba Sands after the Wahibi Bedouin tribe hailing from this region) offers the
intrepid visitor the romance of the desert with the thrill of adventure sports.
A "perfect specimen of a sand sea", the Wahiba Sands, is a small isolated 12,000
sq km desert lying about 190kms from Muscat.
Tents:
The resort has 77 ‘barasti’ style huts
with attached bathrooms in addition to the 9 ‘barasti’ suites all decorated in
traditional Bedouin style.
For those who seek to relive the mystique and luxury of the Arabian desert, the
Al Raha Tourism camp provides accommodation in one of its 15 super luxurious
Tents. Secluded, and regally appointed in traditional weaves and colours of the
Desert, these tents can accommodate 4 persons each and have a small majlis and a
balcony. These truly majestic tents provide complete privacy as well as unique
vistas of the dunes giving you the feeling of being the lord of all you survey.
Restaurants:
From lavish BBQ dinners in the 200 seater main dining hall or traditional
Bedouin food served in the private majlises to a romantic candle light dinner
for two under the stars, the Camp caters to your every mood and every whim.
While Breakfast is Continental, Arabic and Indian, the Chefs are happy to oblige
any special requests.
Leisure:
A fun and
simple adventure activity, true Sandboarding is the art of standing with two
feet locked onto a board and carving arcs down a dune. Using a combination of
lie-down and stand-up boards, participants can get a great sense of speed and
excitement. Participants walk around the less steep sides of the dunes and slide
down the steep face of the dunes.
An
increasingly popular activity, tourists are driven out into the surrounding
desert sand dunes in a 4X4. The ride is a real adrenaline trigger as the vehicle
careers between the cuts and curls of the sand dunes.
Mythical, mystical and exhilarating….the chance to follow in the footsteps of
great astrologers and intrepid pioneers…that’s what stargazing is all about. And
the desert, away from atmospheric water vapor and the ‘light pollution’ of the
cities offers the ideal place for you to indulge in your passion for worlds
beyond our own.
By far the
most exciting thing on 4 wheels, Quad Biking is a rush like no other. Whether
you’re speeding through an obstacle course on a 6 speed automatic Quad Bike, or
taking it easy on a manual one, Quad Biking is guaranteed to knock your hats
off!
An essential
part of the desert experience is the Camel ride. While the sheer stature of the
animal and a sight of its teeth could be intimidating, the camel is usually a
gentle animal.
Archery is all about, aim,
concentration and eye hand coordination. If you have always felt that you are a
good shot, here is the chance to find out. You can have some fun learning to
shoot a straight arrow or pick up new skills from the experienced instructor
present at Al Raha’s very own in-house.
If you have had your fill of dune bashing (unlikely) and Quad biking
(impossible), Al Raha also offers an amateur shooting range.
Volleyball is a team sport played by two teams on a playing court divided by a
net. The object of the game is for each team to send the ball regularly over the
net to ground it on the opponent's court, and to prevent the ball from being
grounded on its own court. The rally continues until the ball touches the
ground/floor, goes "out" or a team fails to return it to the opponent's court or
commits a fault.
If
the weather is cloudy or you are just in a mood to lounge around, there is
nothing quite like a game of table football. Even kids can join in, in this
perfect family activity provided at Al Raha. While the
kids enjoy themselves in the shaded playground and nursery area complete with
slides, see-saws, swings and child houses, Al Raha provided you with an
opportunity to get bedecked with dazzling henna designs and tattoos, let your
hair down at the Bar-B-Q and Bonfire events, sway to he beats of traditional
Omani folk dances and music and haggle over the price of genuine Bedouin
handicrafts.
